FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 25, 2016) – The Kentucky Democratic Party announced today that Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro will be the featured speaker at the Wendell Ford Dinner on June 3 in Louisville. The dinner is the official start to the 2016 State Democratic Convention, where Kentucky Democrats will elect party leaders and choose delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
“Secretary Castro is a national leader who has been a champion for rebuilding our housing market, reducing homelessness among veterans and bringing high quality schools and jobs to communities,” said Rep. Sannie Overly, chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party. “There’s been a lot of talk of Secretary Castro becoming a vice presidential candidate, and we’re still waiting to see if that happens.”
Secretary Castro has been the subject of national media attention as a possible vice presidential candidate. Currently, he is the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and before that served as mayor of San Antonio, Texas. He has been included in Time magazine’s “40 under 40” list of rising stars in American politics, and has been named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders.
The Wendell Ford Dinner is a fundraiser for the Kentucky Democratic Party. It includes a reception at 5:30 pm and dinner at 7 on June 3 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, which will also be the site for the 2016 State Democratic Convention the following day.
