FRANKFORT, Ky. — If you don’t like something, you vote against it, right? Evidently, House Republicans must know that this is a good budget because none of them voted against it. The Kentucky House voted to approve its version 53-0 — with all Republicans abstaining from the vote.
The House version of the budget restores Gov. Bevin’s proposed nine percent cut to higher education. The House budget also restores the governor’s proposed cuts to preschool programs, K-12 education and the school-based Family Resource and Youth Centers.
The plan also funds the required contributions to the state’s public pension systems without borrowing money — and it creates $33 million in Work-Ready scholarships to help graduating high school seniors attend state community and technical colleges.
All of this is paid for by reducing most of the nearly $1 billion Gov. Bevin had set aside for future pension payments, and for the “Rainy Day” fund, which would be the largest in history because of this budget. The House’s budget also gets rid of Gov. Bevin’s plan to borrow $100 million for workforce development.
The House budget also restores cuts to all the constitutional offices, including the Attorney General and the Secretary of State.
We’ll see if the Senate will see the light — and pass this budget.
